El estudio se sustenta con la historia, la definición, las funciones, y los tipos de mantenimiento en general. En cuanto al método se determinó por la metodología del mantenimiento centrado en fiabilidad o RCM (Reliability Centred Maintenance) por sus siglas en inglés, la cual, es una de las técnicas para elaborar planes de mantenimiento dentro de las plantas industriales. El RCM consta de 7 fases; fase 1 listado de funciones y especificaciones, fase 2 determinación de los fallos funcionales y fallos Técnicos, fase 3 determinación de los modos de fallo, fase 4 consecuencias y criticidad de los fallos, fase 5 determinación de las medidas preventivas, fase 6 agrupación de las medidas preventivas, y, por último, la fase 7 la puesta en marcha. Como resultado se obtuvo un plan de mantenimiento RCM para cada sistema de estudio, además de la creación de formatos y tareas asociadas.
